Batten, 58, Buried Friday In Holland Cemetery Eugene Taylor Batten, 58, a leader in the field of agricultural research in the state, and chairman of the Nansemond County School Board, died unexpectedly October 17th at his home in Holland. As Chief of the Tidewater Agricultural Experiment Station at Holland over a period of some 35 years, Batten was widely known throughout the Tidewater area and the state for his contributions to soil and plant research. His discovery in 1938, in collaboration with an associate, that sulphur dust would control leafspot disease in peanut plants, probably constituted his greatest single contribution to Tidewater farmers who each year apply the control method as a regular phase of peanut growing. Plans Realized His plans for an expanded and more adequately equipped experiment station were realized just a few years ago when State and private appropriations made it possible to extend the benefits of the program with the more extensive facilities erected on the original station location near Holland. Batten took over the Holland station shortly after graduating from V.P.I. and for many years conducted the research program single-handed. He was a charter member of the Holland Ruritan Club, the first organized club of Ruritan National. He was a member of the Holland Christian Church and a member of the Men's Bible Class there. Batten was the son of the late E.K. and [Maggie] Elizabeth Minton Batten, of Isle of Wight County. Survivors He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Josephine Winslow Batten, of Holland; two sons, James Knox and Robert Winslow Batten, both of Holland; two sisters, Mrs. W.O. Yeoman, of Smithfield, and Mrs. Noland Brown, of Pittsfield, Mass.; one brother, J.M. Batten, of Smithfield, and several nieces and nephews. The body was taken to I.O. Hill Funeral Home, and on Friday, October 19th at 2 o'clock in the afternoon was taken to the Holland Christian Church for funeral services at 2:30 o'clock. Services were conducted by the Rev. J.H. Lightbourne Jr., pastor of the church. Burial followed in the Holland Cemetery.
