C. Bailey Jones, pastor of West End Baptist Church and the Rev. Dr. H.S. Hardcastle, pastor of Berea Christian Church, Driver. Burial will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery. Mr. Ballance, 68, died Monday at 1:15 p.m. at his home on Western Ave. after a long illness. He was a native of Portsmouth and the son of George Henry and Mrs. Annie Butler Ballance. From 1912 to 1928 he was manager of Virginia Brick Co. From 1928 to 1958, the year of his retirement, he was associated with Pond Brothers Peanut Co. He was a member of West End Baptist Church and the Progressive Men's Bible Class. He was also a member of Hiram Lodge No. 340 AF&AM. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruth James Ballance; three daughters, Mrs. John R. Johnson of Suffolk, Mrs. R. Braxton Hill of Norfolk and Mrs. C.S. Perkinson of Petersburg; one sister, Mrs. Lewis G. Brothers of Suffolk; three brothers, Butler Ballance of Portsmouth, John M. Ballance of Norfolk and Harvey J. Ballance of Upper Montclair, N.J., and 11 grandchildren. His maternal grandfather James Madison BUTLER (1838 - 1892) was a Confederate veteran, having served as a private in Co. D, 16th VA Infantry, before being detailed to the Quartermaster Dept. He & his wife, Sarah Jane (WILLIAMS) BUTLER, are buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk - Block E, Lot 45.
