All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ PEGGY PARKER BALLARD HOLLAND GIRL, 8, IS KILLED WHILE SKATING IN ROAD KILLED BY AUTO PEGGY PARKER BALLARD IS VICTIM OF MISHAP; NEGRO DRIVER ARRESTED Suffolk, Jan 30 - Peggy Parker Ballard, pretty eight year old daughter and only child of Mr. and Mrs. Holland Ballard, was struck by an automobile driven by William Banks, Negro, aged 21 years, on the State highway near her home in Holland this afternoon at 1:30 o’clock and was fatally injured, dying as Dr. Gilmer Holland, of Holland, carrying her in his arms entered Lakeview Hospital, Suffolk. The little girl, with a number of other children, was skating on the highway, and had been holding on, it was stated by a witness, to a cart. She turned loose, and was struck by the Banks’ car, which was coming up from the rear. Her mother and friends accompanied by Dr. Holland, rushed with her to Lakeview Hospital, but to no avail, the child having sustained a fractured skull and broken neck. She is survived by her parents; her grandmother, Mrs. Ada Parker, of Whaleyville; the following aunts, Mrs. Cyrus Brinkley and Mrs. Emmett Skinner, of the county; Mrs. E.T. Hobbs, of Norfolk; Miss Georgie May Parker, of Whaleyville, Miss Navira Ballard, of Buckhorn and Miss Olivette Ballard, of Norfolk. Immediately after the death of the little girl, a coroner’s inquest was held with Dr. Edward Joyner officiating. Banks was arrested and is held on a charge of manslaughter pending an investigation. Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at Holland Christian Church, by the Rev. Carl R. Key, Dr. N.G. Newman and the Rev. W.H. Corbitt. Burial will be in Holland Cemetery.
