RAY BAINES IS KILLED IN ACTION Was Serving With U.S. Third Army The family of Sergeant E. Ray Baines have been notified by the War Department that he was killed in action somewhere in France on Sept. 10, 1944. Sgt. Baines was the son of Julius E. and the late Mrs. Ludie Taylor Baines, of Nansemond County, and husband of Mrs. Cornelia Baines, of Portsmouth. He was educated at Cypress Chapel High School, and before entering the service, was employed for a few months at the Norfolk Navy Yard. Prior to that he was employed for a number of years at Baines Grocery, Wellons Street, Suffolk. Sergeant Baines was 26 years of age. He was a member of Suffolk Christian Church and of the Twentieth Century Baraca Class. According to Major W.E. MacClenny, who was his Sunday School teacher for many years, "he was one of the finest young men the city and county have produced." He received his military training at Camp Forrest, Tennessee; Desert Training Center, California, and Fort Dix, New Jersey. He has been in the service since July, 1942, was sent to England in June, 1944, and was serving with General George S. Patton's Third Army at the time of his death. Besides his father and widow, Sergeant Baines is survived by two brothers, William J. Baines and J. Ryland Baines, of Suffolk; two sisters, Mrs. F.J. Brinkley and Mrs. C.H. Hollowell, of Nansemond County. ****************************************************************************** Memorial Service For E. Ray Baines A memorial service for Sgt. E. Ray Baines, who, according to a communication received by his widow, was killed in action somewhere in France Sept. 20, 1944, will be held Sunday at 4 o'clock, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Baines, 315 Bosley Avenue. The services will be conducted by the Rev. John G. Truitt, D.D., pastor of the Suffolk Christian Church, of which Sgt. Baines was a member, assisted by the Rev. R.E. Brittle, of Cypress Chapel, the church of his childhood. Sgt. Baines was a faithful member in both the church and Sunday School of the Suffolk Christian Church, and will be greatly missad. He had many friends, and was one of the most popular young merchants in the city. Sgt. E.
