All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Mrs. Beaman, Former Suffolk Woman, Dies Funeral services for Mrs. Katherine Prentis Beaman, 81, former Suffolk resident who died yesterday morning at her home in Norfolk, will be held tomorrow at noon at Christ and St. Luke's Church. Mrs. Beaman, whose civic, patriotic and religious accomplishments over a period of years gained wide recognition, died after a long illness. The body will be taken from the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartment on Thursday to Christ and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church for funeral services at noon. The Rev. W. Taylor Willis, rector of the Church, will official. Interment will be in Elwood [sic; Elmwood] Cemetery. Mrs. Beaman, who was the daughter of the late Judge Robert Riddick Prentis, chief justice of the Virginia State Supreme Court, and Margaret Ann Whitehead, was born at the University of Virginia, where her father was proctor. Her family moved to Suffolk when she was a child and she spent her early life there. It was in Suffolk on October 19, 1887, that the was married to Nathaniel Beaman, who later became president of the National Bank of Commerce of Norfolk. After coming to Norfolk. Mrs. Beaman took an active interest in community affairs. She was elected to state and national offices by the Colonial Dames and by the Daughters of the American Revolution and was very active in the work of Christ Church. She is survived by one daughter, two sons, and two grandsons.
