He was the son of the late James Elbert and Mary Johnson Britt [sic; Brett] of Hertford County, N.C. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. H.D. Britt; five sons, Holman D. Britt of Petersburg, Junius H. Britt of Suffolk, James D. Britt of Wenoak, N.J.; Edward W. Britt of Lynchburg and Thomas K. Britt, Petersburg; five daughters, Mrs. R.W. McCarthy of Suffolk, Mrs. W.C. Bivens of Suffolk, Mrs. R.W. Hazzard of Woodberry, N.J., Mrs. Betty Lewis of Woodberry, N.J., and Mrs. Catherine Merino of Long Island, N.Y. Two brothers, Jimmy Guy Britt of Hertford County, N.C., and Leo Britt of Zuni; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Story, Norfolk, Mrs. Vennie Williams, Gates, N.C., and Mrs. E.I. Miles of Newsoms; one half sister, Mrs. Rosa Hill of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., 27 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He was a member of the Extension Department of the Wilroy Baptist Church and was a retired Southampton County farmer. He had worked for the past seven-and- a-half years in Suffolk as a night watchman, most recently at Benthall's. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the R.W. Baker Funeral Home by the Rev. James A. Tate, pastor of the Wilroy Baptist Church and Dr. R.E. Brittle, pastor of Bethlehem Christian Church. Burial will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery. His step-mother (1855 - 1930) applied for a pension 28 Jun 1924 in Southampton Co. His father left will 23 Oct 1903, proved 16 Dec 1915.
