All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ LEE BRITT LEE BRITT, DEAN OF LAWYERS IN SUFFOLK, DIES FUNERAL SERVICES FOR WELL-KNOWN TIDEWATER VIRGINIAN WEDNESDAY Suffolk, Jan. 26 - Lee Britt, dean of the legal profession in this city, former superintendent of schools, and for 25 years president of the Suffolk- Nansemond Bar Association, died this morning at 11:30 o’clock at his home on North Main Street, after a brief illness. Mr. Britt was the son of Exum B. and Mrs. Eurora Riddick Britt, and a grandson of Benjamin Riddick, one of Suffolk’s early mayors. He graduated at the College of Emory and Henry, and had practiced law in Suffolk for about half a century. For a number of years, he served as superintendent of schools of Suffolk and Nansemond County, and at the time of his death was Nansemond County Commissioner of accounts. He was equally as prominent in his church work, being one of the leading lay members of the Methodist Church in having served as secretary of the board of finance of the Virginia-Conference for 15 years, and in Main Street Methodist Church of Suffolk, where he had given many years of active service, he had served as chairman of the board of stewards, and also as teacher of the L.M. Lee Bible Class. He also had represented the church in district and State conference, and had served also as secretary of the district conference board. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lula Vanderslice Britt; three sisters Mrs. A.R. Myrick and Misses Dora and Louise Britt, of Suffolk; two brothers, Luther R. Britt, of Norfolk, and Benjamin R. Britt, of Clarksburg, W. Va., and an aunt, Miss Lou Riddick, of Suffolk. In his profession he represented the highest type of attorney, his ethics and his conducted of business being of the highest standards. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11 o’clock at Main Street Methodist Church by the pastor, the Rev. Dr. George... ******************************************************************************* LEE BRITT Funeral services for Lee Britt, prominent member of the Suffolk Bar and lay leader in the Methodist Church, who died Sunday at his home on North Main Street, after a brief illness, was conducted Wednesday morning at 11 o’clock, by Dr. George Wesley Jones, pastor of Main Street Methodist Church, in which Mrs. Britt had served for more than half a century. The Rev. Edgar Allen Potts, of Oxford Methodist Church and the Rev. C.C. Bell, presiding elder of the Portsmouth-Newport News district also took part. Active pallbearers were: William Beamon, Jr., W.T. Myrick, Seth Campbell, Dr. T. Wood Campbell, Henry S. Eley, Howard Gwaltney, of Smithfield, Judge James L. McLemore and Sam Vanderslice, Jr. of Washington, D.C. Members of the Suffolk- Nansemond Bar Association and members of the board of stewards of Main Street Methodist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers. Mr. Britt, who had practiced law in Suffolk for around half a century, was a graduate of Bethel Academy in Fauquier County, and graduated in law at the University of Virginia. Members of the L.M. Lee Bible Class of which Mr. Britt had been teacher for a number of years attended the services in a body. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
