BYRD DIES OF INJURIES IN AUTO ACCIDENT Struck Leaving Bus Friday Night Near Bethlehem Church LEFT HOSPITAL Returned Saturday And Died Late Yesterday; 5 Others Are Killed O.T. Byrd, of Suffolk, and five other Virginians died violent deaths during the weekend, with highway accidents claiming three victims, a deputy sheriff was shot raiding a liquor still in Patrick county, and a Warren county carpenter was found beaten to death in his mountain cabin near Front Royal. Mr. Byrd, 48, of York street, died yesterday afternoon at 3:30 at the Lakeview Hospital from injuries received in an accident Friday night near Bethlehem Christian Church on the Holland highway. Wouldn't Stay It is reported that Mr. Byrd was struck by an automobile coming from Franklin driven by Leonard Barr, of Portsmouth and Suffolk, as he alighted from a Franklin-bound bus. Mr. Barr carried Mr. Byrd to the hospital for treatment but Mr. Byrd refused to stay, thinking his injuries slight. He was admitted Saturday morning to the hospital at 7 o'clock for an operation. It was found he was suffering from internal injuries and a fractured leg. He failed to rally to medical treatment. An official investigation will be made of the accident by State Police, it was said. Lewis Taylor, 28-year-old Negro of Ellerson, was killed instantly Sunday night when struck by an automobile on the Mechanicsville Turnpike. The auto struck the Negro as he ran across the highway. The driver of an automobile was killed and four companions injured yesterday when their car struck the trailer of a produce truck about three miles south of South Hill. The dead man was identified as Will Woods, Negro, of Washington. John J. Joynes of Norfolk died in a Frederick, Md., hospital Saturday night. His chest was crushed in an auto-truck accident near Hyattstown, Md. Walter Willis, Patrick county deputy sheriff, was fatally wounded Saturday while raiding a moonshine liquor still south of Stuart near the Virginia-North Carolina line. Elisha Squartz, 48, a carpenter living alone at his mountain home south of Front Royal, was found beaten to death Saturday. Funeral Service Funeral services for Mr. Byrd will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock at the I.O. Hill and Co. Funeral Home by the Rev. J.C. Truitt, pastor of the Suffolk Christian Church. Burial will be in Cedar Hill cemetery. Mr. Byrd is survived by his wife, Mrs. Melissa Byrd; two daughters, Mrs. J.W. Brinkley, of Suffolk, and Mrs. J.H. Duke, of Nansemond county; one son, Delaney C. Byrd; two grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. A.T. Byrd, of Suffolk; three sisters, Mrs. O.L. Holland, of Suffolk, and Mrs. Jimmie Bonds and Mrs. Frank Spady, of Portsmouth; two brothers, N.H. Byrd, of Chuckatuck, and J.A. Byrd, of Suffolk, and several nieces and nephews. Byrd, Suffolk resident, when the accident case was heard before Trial Justice Nat T. Gray in county court today. Mr. Byrd was struck by Barr's car as the Suffolk man walked around a bus from which he had alighted near Bethlehem church, on the Holland highway. Gray yesterday of circumstances in connection with the fatal injury of O.T. Byrd, struck by an automobile driven by Leonard Barr, this paper inadvertently and unintentionally listed the driver of the car as Phillip Barr, brother of Leonard. Leonard Barr, who was exonerated of blame in the case, is a Suffolk and Norfolk business man.
