R.E. Brittle, pastor of Bethlehem Christian Church. Burial will be in Cypress Chapel Christian Church cemetery. Mrs. Byrd, 44, of 1224 White Marsh Rd., died Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the Portsmouth Naval Hospital after a long illness. She was a daughter of Mrs. India Ellis Hyatt and the late John W. Hancock, Jr., and was a native of Portsmouth. She was a member of Cypress Chapel Christian Church. Surviving are her husband, John Preston Byrd, Jr., two daughters, Mrs. Joyce Lee and Miss Sharon Ann Byrd, both of Nansemond County; one son, Stanley Holland of Nansemond County; five sisters, Mrs. Edward Jones and Mrs. Sidney Johnson of Suffolk, Mrs. Louie Seubert of Norfolk, Mrs. Jesse Jackson of Nansemond County and Mrs. Henry Hearn of Smithfield; three brothers, J.W. Hancock of Portsmouth, Jimmie Hancock of Suffolk and Lewis Hyatt of Warwick; and three grandchildren. ****************************************************************************** Mrs. Bruce [sic; Ruth] H. Byrd Rites Held Sunday Funeral services for Mrs. Bruce Hancock Byrd were conducted Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Hill Funeral Home by the Rev. R.E. Brittle, pastor of Bethlehem Christian Church. Burial was in Cypress Chapel Christian Church Cemetery. Mr. Brittle read two poems, "To Parents" and "Crossing The Bar." Miss Judy Edwards and Mrs. Richard Forrester sang "The Old Rugged Cross," accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Claudia Jacobs. The casket was covered with a pall of red roses and white carnations. Pallbearers were W.M. Wilkins, Arthur Wilkins, George Stubbs, B.F. Case, R.C. Badger, T.V. Simpson, Surry Horton and M.B. King.
