State Police said the car driven by Russell C. Brett, 66, of 306 Pond Drive, was headed west at 2:15 p.m. when it apparently crossed the center line and collided head on with the truck, driven by Richard E. Boone, 34, of Route 2, Gates, N.C. Boone was not injured. The log swerved right, hit a ditch, and crashed through a fence. The logs broke their restraining chains and shot off the trailer to the left of the driver. The impact of the collision ruptured a saddle tank of the truck, spilling Diesel fuel over the highway. Traffic was delayed 30 minutes while the highway was hosed with water and sanded. Nansemond County Medical examiner, Dr. Richardson Joyner said Brett died of multiple injuries to his head, chest and body. The body was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Norfolk. A native of Como, N.C., Brett was a salesman for Home Beneficial Life Insurance Co. He was a son of Isaac W. and Mrs. Carrie C. Brett. He was a member of Oxford Methodist Church and its Men’s Bible Class, and the National Association of Life Underwriters, and Travelers Protective Association. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Anna Curry Brett; two sons, Russell C. Brett, Jr. of Franklin and William C. Brett of Suffolk; a sister Miss Foushee Brett of the home and four grandchildren.
