All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ RICHIE PARKER BRITTLE HUNDREDS ATTEND FUNERAL OF CHILD KILLED IN FALL Burial Last Sunday FELL FROM GATE AT HOME OF GRANDPARENTS Richie Parker Brittle, four-year old son of the Rev. R.E. Brittle of Nansemond county and the Mrs. Mary Sue Parker Brittle, died Thursday morning at 3:15 o'clock at Lakeview Hospital from a fractured skull, sustained when he fell from a gate at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R.T. Brittle, in Dendron, Surry County, Wednesday afternoon. The little boy, who had made his home with this grandparents since the death of his mother was swinging on the gate and fell. He soon recovered from the fall, apparently and went out to play. About 5:30 o'clock he returned to the house and complained of being sleepy. He sunk into a stupor, and was rushed by his grandparents to Lakeview Hospital, where it was found he had sustained a fractured skull. At the time of the accident his father was at Ocean View where he has been conducting a series of evangelistic services. Mr. Brittle was in the midst of his sermon Wednesday night when called to the hospital in Suffolk. He arrived at the hospital to find his child unconscious, and the boy died not regain consciousness before his death. Hundreds of members of the churches served by the Rev. R.E. Brittle attended the funeral services held Sunday afternoon at Cypress Chapel Christian Church. The services were conducted by the Rev. J.M. Roberts and the Rev. John G. Truitt, D.D. The junior choirs of Bethlehem and Cypress Chapel Christian churches sang the hymns, "Safe in the Arms of Jesus." "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder" and "God Be With Your 'Til We Meet Again." A solo "Jesus, Blessed Jesus," was sung by Louise Bradshaw, and Mrs. A.E. Byrd sang "Will The Circle Be Unbroken?" A pall of pink and white rosebuds and gypsophila covered the casket. Active pallbearers were: Edward O'Berry, Cyrus Brinkley, Jr., Rudolph Lynch, Bill Mann, Ralph Amos, Thomas Ashley, Marion Duke and Edward Taylor. Boys and girls of the primary and junior classes of Cypress and Bethlehem Sunday Schools served as an honorary escort. Burial was in the Brittle lot in Cypress Church Cemetery where four years ago the little boy's mother was buried. Besides his father and grandparents, the child is survived by several aunts and uncles. Two of his aunts reside in Smithfield, they are Mrs. B.R. Edwards and Mrs. J.B. Whitmore.
