SALLIE BURTON Mrs. Sallie Elizabeth Burton died last week at a Richmond nursing home following an illness of several years. She was 76 years of age. She was the widow of Walter Maynard Burton and the daughter of the late Archibald Burton* and Mattie Bailey Duck. She is survived by one son, Pepper* M. Burton and two grandchildren of Suffolk. She was a native of Isle of Wight County but had resided in Suffolk for 40 years. She was a member of Main Street Methodist Church. Sallie Elizabeth (DUCK; Mrs. Walter M.) BURTON, of Suffolk, b. 14 Mar 1868, Isle of Wight Co., d. 20 Jul 1944, Richmond, interred in Cedar Hill Cemetery (Block F, Lot 26*), Suffolk, 23 Jul 1944, "The Smithfield (VA) Times," Vol. 27, No. 18, July 26, 1944, p. 1, col. 5 *Additional information: Birthdate &c. from D.Cert. #15282, for which Peple M. Burton was the informant. It gives buried in Suffolk. Cedar Hill list, an extension of the Southampton County Historical Society {SCHS} Cemetery Project: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/nansemond/cemeteries/cedar_a.txt Her husband has a substantial obelisk in Cedar Hill, pictured with his Find a Grave Memorial, #88277481. Presumably, Sallie is buried with him, and her name should have been engraved on a different face of the obelisk, which sets at 45° to the row. Her father is buried in the same lot. There is no indication he had a middle name; "Burton" in the text seems to have been a large typo. He appears in the 1900 Census in Smithfield, widowed, one of two cabinetmakers boarding with undertaker William Rouse. In 1860, he was a merchant in Smithfield. Her parents m. 18 Oct 1865 in Isle of Wight Co. Her son Peple McGuire BURTONS Sr. is buried there also - Block G, Lot 93.
