BROTHERS DIES IN NORFOLK PROMINENT MERCHANT HAD SERVED AS CYPRESS CHAPEL POSTMASTER SINCE 1889 Robert E. Brothers, widely known Nansemond County farmer and merchant and postmaster at Cypress Chapel for 49 years, died at St. Vincent's hospital, Norfolk, this afternoon at 12:30 o'clock from an illness of several weeks duration. Mr. Brothers would have observed his 74th birthday had he lived through April. Member of one of the oldest families of Virginia, Mr. Brothers had lived near his birthplace all his adult life. He was appointed postmaster at Cypress Chapel by President Benjamin Harrison of May 5, 1889, and had served the office since that date without interruption. Surviving Mr. Brother are his widow, Mrs. Mary Savage Brothers; and four children by two previous marriages: a daughter, Mrs. Fannie Leary, of Norfolk, and three sons, Robert Bruce Brothers, Reginald E. Brothers and Leon B. Brothers, all of Suffolk. The body of Mr. Brothers was moved from Norfolk to the funeral home of R.W. Baker & Co., 115 North Saratoga Street. Funeral arrangements had not been completed early this afternoon but it was stated that the funeral services will be conducted at Cypress Chapel Christian Church, of which Mr. Brothers was a lifelong member, and burial will be in Cedar Hill cemetery.
