Borum, a former member of the Legislature from Nansemond county and ex-postmaster of Suffolk, died at the family residence, on Grace Street, on Sunday, July 11, 1897, of consumption. The deceased had an attack of the grip early in the year 1896, since which time she had been gradually failing, although confined to her bed less than a week. Last Sunday morning her condition became critical, and the devoted watcher by her bedside realized that her feet were treading the margin of the river of death, from whose hither bank the patient sufferer evidently heard the echoes of heavenly melodies and caught the fragrance that floated from the blossoming tree of life. At 1:20 o’clock p.m., without a struggle or a murmur, the gentle spirit was freed from its tenement of clay and returned to the God who gave it, while the grief-stricken ones gazed with tearful eyes upon the casket from which the precious jewel they loved so well had been taken and placed in the royal diadem, but leaving in the placid features the visible seal of God’s love, in that the peace that passeth understanding was writ thereon. Mrs. Borum was the daughter of the late Daniel and Henrietta Brothers, and was thirty-eight years of age. She had been married seventeen years, and leaves a husband and three children - Etta, aged sixteen years; Sallie George, aged thirteen, and Helen, aged four years. She is also survived by three brothers and two sisters - Messrs. Daniel, Beverly and Lewis Brothers and Misses Maggie and Mary Brothers. The deceased was a faithful and devoted wife, a loving and affectionate mother and sister, a kind and beloved neighbor. She was also a humble, consistent Christian, and died in the triumphs of a living faith. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon, at 5 o’clock, at the Christian church, of which she was a member, a large number of relatives and friends being present. The services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. W.W. Staley, D.D., assisted by Rev. H.C. Cheatham, of the Methodist church, and Rev. J.F. Love, of the Baptist church. The singing by the choir was especially appropriate and touching. At the conclusion of the exercises at the church the solemn cortege wended its way to Cedar Hill Cemetery, and as the sun was sinking in the golden-tinted west and the hush of eventide was settling down over the beautiful city of the dead the remains of this good woman were laid to rest in mother earth, the mound above her being covered with beautiful and fragrant flowers, fit emblems of the life and character of her to whom they were tributes of affection and esteem. The following named gentlemen were pall-bearers: Colonel Thos. W. Smith, Junius T. Parker, George L. Barton, W.B. Causey, B.M. Bruce and T.W. Artman. Sallie Jane Hortense (BROTHERS; Mrs. George L.)
