MEMORIAL RITES FOR JOHN BARNES 

To Be Held At Home Wednesday 

  SUFFOLK, Feb. 26. - Memorial services for Staff Sergeant John Goode Barnes, 
Jr., who was killed in action in France, June 6, 1944, will be held at 3:30 
Wednesday afternoon at the home, 318 Cedar Street. 

  He was the son of the late John Goode Barnes, Sr., and Mrs. John R. Willis 
[sic; Wills].  Besides his mother he is survived by his step-father, John R. 
Wills; two brothers, Lt. Jack Wills, now serving in France, Gordon B. Wills, 
USN, of Gulfport, Miss.; two uncles, Grady Powell and Edwin Davis; six aunts, 
Mrs. C.O. Bradshaw, Mrs. Ellen Powell, Mrs. Hardy Holland and Mrs. Tom Smith, 
all of Suffolk; Mrs. Pearl Brown, of Holland, and Mrs. Lizzie Pierce, of 
Whaleyville; and a grandmother, Mrs. R.H. Powell, of Suffolk. 

  Services will be conducted by Dr. John G. Truitt, pastor of the Suffolk 
Christian Church, of which Sergeant Barnes was a member, and Dr. H.J. Goodwin, 
pastor of the First Baptist Church.

VFW To Attend Barnes Burial 

  All members of the Joseph P. Bagley Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, are 
requested to assemble tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at Cedar Hill 
Cemetery to attend the services to be conducted for Staff Sergeant John G. 
Barnes, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Wills, of Suffolk. 

  Members will meet at the Constantia House at the cemetery. 

  Suffolk Post 57, American Legion, will act as honorary pallbearers and post 
members are asked to meet at the grave at 2:30 o'clock. 

  Relative to the funeral services to be held Sunday afternoon for Sergeant 
John G. Barnes, services will be conducted only at the grave, and not at the 
funeral home as formerly reported. 

  The service will take place at Cedar Hill Cemetery at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, 
and will be conducted by Dr. John G. Truitt and the Rev. Lester Lane.

Body of John G. Barnes Returned for Reburial 

  Suffolk, Feb. 7. - The body of Staff Sergeant John Goode Barnes, son of Mrs. 
John R. Willis [sic; Wills], arrived here yesterday from Philadelphia and was 
escorted by Technical Sergeant Leo. M. Bowyer of the 2272nd Escort Detachment, 
and was carried to the Funeral Home of R. W. Baker and Company. 

  Funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon at the grave in Cedar Hill 
Cemetery at 2:30 o'clock with Dr. John G. Truitt of the Christian Church and 
the Rev. J. Lester Lane of First Baptist Church, officiating. 

  Sergeant Barnes was a member of Company B, 29th Division and was killed in 
the Normandy Invasion on June 6, D-Day. 

  Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Willis; his step-father, John R. Willis; two 
half brothers, Jack Willis of Suffolk and Gordon Willis of Virginia 
Polytechnic Instituate.  Members of the American Legion Post 57 and Veterans 
of Foreign Wars, will serve as honorary pallbearers.

John G. Barnes Is Reburied Here 

  Funeral services for Sergeant John Goode Barnes, who was killed in action 
June 6, 1944, in France, and whose body was returned to the States the latter 
part of last week, were held at 2:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the grave 
in Cedar Hill Cemetery.  Dr. John G. Truitt and the Rev. J. Lester Lane 
officiated. 

  The casket was covered with an American flag.  Pallbearers were Gus 
Hollowell, Frank Shotton, Emmett and Dobie White, Conrad Barnes, J. Pipkin 
Powell, Morris Luke, Corben [sic; Corbin] Davis and Curtis B. Smith. 

  Members of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign War and of the Sr. 
Fidelis Class of the First Baptist Church attended in a body.
