Death yesterday at noon claimed Phillip B. Brinkley, one of the few remaining Confederate veterans of this city and one of the most widely known and prominent of the older citizens of the Suffolk. The immediate cause of his death was an attack of pneumonia following an accident two weeks ago when he accidentally fell from his chair, fracturing one of his hips. His recovery was despaired of from the start because of his advanced years, age being 84, although up until the end of the week he appeared to be getting along satisfactorily. At the outbreak of the War Between the States Mr. Brinkley joined the mighty Gray hosts of Lee and Jackson and served throughout the conflict as a member of Company I, Anderson's Division of Mahone's Brigade, an organization that bore the brunt of many a hard fought battle, covering itself with glory. Since the close of the war and almost up to the time of the accident which hastened his end he had led an active life. Beside his widow, Mrs. Nena [sic*] Franklin Brinkley, Mr. Brinkley leaves two daughters, Mrs. James E. Crocker and Mrs. Andrew Tyree, of Suffolk; three sons, Preston S. Brinkley and I.P. Brinkley, of Suffolk, and O.C. Brinkley, of Roanoke, and number of grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at the Clay street home this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. The Rev. H.E. Cromer, pastor of Main street M.E. Church, assisted by Dr. W.W. Staley, pastor-emeritus of the Christian Church, and by the Rev. H.S. Hardcastle, pastor of the Christian Church conducted the service. Active pallbearers were sons and sons-in-law: P.S. Brinkley, I.P. Brinkley, O.C. Brinkley, Philip Crocker, James E. Crocker, B.D. Crocker and Abram Brinkley. Honorary pallbearers will include Frank Butler, Harvey Butler, Ernest Wilson, Jasper Baines, J.S. Vaughan, A.W. Ballard, P.T. Cahoon, T.O. Palmer, J.A. Harrell, W.J. Rhodes, James Parker, Dr. C.F. Griffin and Dr. W.C. Gibson. Burial was in Cedar Hill cemetery.
