BRYANT Suffolk, Feb., 18. -- Mrs. Mary A. Bryant, widow of E.T. Bryant, died of pneumonia Saturday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock in the 78th year of her age. She is survived by five sons, R.L. Bryant, James H. Bryant, R.R. Bryant, F.P. Bryant, of Suffolk; and Ben I. Bryant, of Chattanooga, Tenn.; three daughters, Mrs. W.T. Jones and Miss Rosa Bryant, of Suffolk, and Mrs. John Scott, of Corapeake, N.C. She also is survived by twenty-three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Mrs. Bryant was a woman of many fine traits of character, and her life was one devoted to her home and children. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Jones in Saratoga street, the Rev. T.B. MacSparren, D.D., pastor of the Main Street M.E. Church, officiating. Burial will be in the family lot in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be the five sons of the deceased and her son-in-law, W.T. Jones. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Lewis Rawles, H.S. Eley, Judge James L. McLemore, Dr. H.W. Campbell, M.N. Harrison, J.L. Little, L.P. Jordan, W.J. Richards, H. Jones, R.R. Smith. (LESLER) PHELPS. Rather, her parents were James & Barsheba (LESTER) PHELPS, who m. in 1832 in Isle of Wight Co.; Barsheba d. in 1849. James 2m. Catherine D. ROBERTS in 1851 in Isle of Wight Co. Catherine d. 5 Jul 1865 in Nansemond Co. of bilious fever. Catherine was named as a heir of her father David ROBERTS, who left will 29 Aug 1856, proved 2 Sep 1861. (Isle of Wight Co. Mixed Records, Vol. 27, pp. 254-55). Her brother James A. PHELPS was a Confederate veteran. He served as a private in Co. I, 13th VA Cavalry, and was wounded in the mouth by a minie ball. His horse was KIA Sep. 9, 1862, at Williamsburg. A shipbuilder before the war, he was transferred at his request to the CS Navy, being unable to afford another horse.
