COGGINS Funeral services for Capt. Benjamin L. Coggins, last of the river packet owners and skippers, native of Isle of Wight County*, who died Friday, were held at the home in Riverview, Suffolk, Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock by the Rev. Dr. John G. Truitt, pastor of the Suffolk Christian Church, assisted by the Rev. Dr. I.W. Johnson and the Rev. H.J. Goodwin, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Suffolk. The Christian Church choir, with Mrs. C.R. Wallace as accompanist sang "Going Down the Valley," "Must Jesus Bear the Cross Alone" and "The Old Rugged Cross"; O.H. Parker sang "Sunrise Tomorrow." The casket was covered with a pall of calla lilies and stephanotis, and there were many other floral tributes. Active pallbearers were Henry C. Barton, Henry Crocker, Angus I. Hines, Charles Duke, J.R. Vann, W.B. and James Harrell and Frank E. Butler. Friends of the family serviced as honorary pallbearers. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Capt. (#12801) gives b. 13 Dec 1862, Nansemond Co.; it gives his wife as Mrs. E.R. Coggins. His marker, pictured with his Find a Grave Memorial (#85502533), shows b. 5 Dec 1873. His wife was Roxie A. CHAPMAN COGGINS (1874-1953), dt/o William R. & Mary A. CHAPMAN. Ben & Roxie m. 15 Nov 1893 in Suffolk.
