J. Oliver Cutchins, 66 years old, prominent farmer of Nansemond county, died in Lakeview Hospital, this morning of injuries sustained when he lost control of the automobile which he was driving and crashed into a fence near Holland. He had a new car, it was stated, and it hit the fence and turned over in a field not far from his home toward which he was driving. Mr. Cutchins was rushed to Lakeview Hospital for medical attention but with his chest crushed in and face badly bruised up he did not linger long. He died shortly before 9 o'clock. Mr. Cutchins was on his way home. He lived at what is known as "Elwood." He was well known in the county and had many friends. ****************************************************************************** Last Rites Said For J. Oliver Cutchins [sic; Cutchin] Last rites for J. Oliver Cutchins, well-known farmer of Nansemond County, who died in a local hospital Saturday of injuries sustained when the car he was driving went through a fence and turned over, were held yesterday afternoon at his home, Elwood, near Holland. They were attended by a large number of his friends. They were conducted by the Rev. Sparks W. Melton, D.D., pastor of the Freemason Street Baptist Church, Norfolk. Active pallbearers were all nephews of Mr. Cutchins and were Sol. Rawles, Clifford Cutchins, John Cutchins, Dr. J.C. Rawles, Raymond Cutchins, Coleman Cutchins, Ralph and John Rawles. Honorary pallbearers were present by the score and were friends and neighbors. Interment was in the old family cemetery on the Cutchin estate. (Rt. 651) crosses them, and about half a mile east of Elwood & 2 miles west of Holland. Brentwood Rd. (Rt. 655) ends at Barnes Rd., just south of the crossing. Barnes Rd. (Rt. 651) ends at Elwood Rd. (Rt. 613), about a quarter mile south of Elwood. The Nansemond Co. B.Reg. (1868 #31) also gives Cutchins. D.Cert. 25735 also gives Cutchins.
