[sic; U.] COHOON IS KILLED BY HIT-RUN DRIVER Found On Rt. 460, Taken to Lakeview By J. F. Culpepper Corporal George U. Cohoon of Suffolk, attached to the Air Corps at the Army Air Base, Birmingham, Ala., died at 1:30 [sic*] this morning in the Lakeview hospital about an hour after Sheriff J.F. Culpepper found him lying unconscious on the highway on Route 460 [sic*]. Cohoon, from papers found near him, was home on a ten-day furlough to visit his mother, Mrs. Sue Urquhart Cohoon of 318 North Main street. The corporal was carrying tickets which indicated that he was coming from Bristol over the Norfolk and Western Railroad to Suffolk, said the Sheriff. "Evidently, he went to sleep on the train and went on to Norfolk, and was hitch-hiking back to Suffolk when he was hit." Culpepper said. From Cohoon's injuries, a fractured skull, crushed arm, and internal injuries, the Sheriff surmised that the corporal may have been hit by a hit-run truck. The Sheriff requests that all Portsmouth authorities, who see any motor vehicle which bears evidence of damage due to running down someone, report the vehicle to him. Cohoon is survived by his mother, two brothers, Claude C. Cohoon of Brunswick, Ga., and William B. Cohoon of Suffolk; one niece, Margaret Urquhart Cohoon; one nephew, Henry Peebles Cohoon; three uncles, Henry Urquhart of Suffolk, George P. Urquhart of Norfolk, and Paul to [sic; T.] Cohoon of Suffolk. The body was brought to the R.W. Baker and Company Funeral Home where it will remain until 4:45 tomorrow afternoon, shortly before services will be held at the grave in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The Reverend Louis K. Haskell will conduct services at 5 o'clock. ****************************************************************************** Suffolk, Aug. 19 - Corp. George Urquhart Cohoon, aged 39, U.S. Army, stationed at Birmingham, Ala., son of Mrs. Sue Urquhart Cohoon and the late Claud C. Cohoon, died in a local hospital this morning at 1:30 o'clock, about an hour after he is believed to have been struck by a hit-and-run automobile while enroute home on furlough. Sheriff J. Frank Culpepper, who found the soldier lying on the highway with his head and right arm crushed, said the soldier was enroute to Suffolk from Portsmouth when he was apparently struck by a motor vehicle. He quoted a sister-in-law living in Portsmouth as saying that Cohoon called her about 9 o'clock, advising that he had just arrived from Birmingham by plane and was going on to Suffolk to surprise his mother. The sheriff said the soldier apparently caught a ride part of the way to Suffolk and was walking along the highway when he was struck. Surviving him are his mother; two brothers, Claude C. Cohoon, Jr. of Augusta, Ga., and William Cohoon of Suffolk; an uncle, Henry M. Urquhart; a niece and nephew, Margaret and Henry Cohoon, Jr. of Portsmouth; and a large number of relatives in this city and area. The body was taken to the funeral home of R.W. Baker and Company and on Saturday afternoon the procession will leave the funeral home at 4:50 o'clock for the grave in Cedar Hill Cemetary where services will be conducted at 5 p.m. by the Rev. Louis A. Haskell, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, in which Corporal Cohoon held membership. Corporal Cohoon's commanding officer at Birmingham called today to say that an escort from that city will arrive in Suffolk Saturday afternoon and will serve as a military escort for the body. ****************************************************************************** CORP.
