All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JAMES HOWARD CORBITT James Howard Corbitt, Local Attorney, Dead SUFFOLK, June 21. - James Howard Corbitt, 76, prominent attorney in both Suffolk and the State of Virginia since the turn of the century, died last night at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Richmond. He had been in failing health for several months preceding his death. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Roberta Ansley Corbitt; three daughters, Mrs. Tomlin Braxton Horsley, Mrs. Lamar Wright Little, and Miss Harriet Whitley Corbitt; one sister, Mrs. James N. Peed, of Portsmouth; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, in Richmond. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery. Native Of Boykins Corbitt was born in Boykins, Southampton County, Virginia, April 29, 1869, the son of James Madison and Martha Ann Corbitt. He was educated at Richmond College and the University of Virginia, where he received the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Philosophy and Master of Arts. He was a member of the following fraternities at the University: Alpha Tau Omega, Lambda Pa, Phi Delta Phi, Tilka Society and Phi Beta Kappa Society. He was instructor in Physics at the University for several years. He practiced law in Atlanta, Georgia, for one year, and in Suffolk since 1900. He was a member and past president of the Suffolk Bar Association, a member and past president of the Virginia State Bar Association, a member and past vice-prealdent from Virginia and a member of the General Council, the Executive Committee, and several other committees of the American Bar Association, a member and Director of The American Judicature Society, a member of the American Law Institute, and the Inter-American Bar Association. He also belonged to the following societies and clubs: Virginia Historical Society, Association tor tbe Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, Sons of the American Revolution, New England Historic Genealogical Society, New York Society, The American Academy of Political and Social Science, University Club, Cosmos Club (Washington, D.C.), Virginia Club (Norfolk), Princess Anne Country Club (Virginia Beach), Commonwealth Club (Richmond), Colonnade Club (Un. of Virginia) and Farmington Country Club (Charlottesville, Va.). His chief interests were in the fields of law and education. For a number of years he had been a member of the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia, the Alumni Board of Trustees of the University of Virginia Endowment Fund, and was a former member of the Board of Managers of the University of Virginia Alumni Association. At the last meetings of the Board of Visitors and the Alumni Association held last week, resolutions were passed expressing appreciation for his outstanding services in behalf of the University. He was engaged in the general practice of law and represented all of the railway companies having lines running through Suffolk, being Division Counsel of The Virginian Railway Company, Asst. Division Counsel of the Southern Railway Company, District Counsel of Seaboard Air Line Railway Company, and Local Counsel for the Norfolk and Western Railway Company and the Atlantic Coast Line Railway Company. Va., June 23. - (AP) - James H. Corbitt, 76-year-old attorney of Suffolk for whom funeral services are being held in Richmond today, was the only University of Virginia alumnus in recent years to serve simultaneously on three boards of the institution, President John Lloyd Newcomb pointed out today. Corbitt served as a member of the Board of Visitors, the Alumni Board of Trustees of the University Endowment Fund, and Alumni Board of Managers. Only last Saturday, Dr. Newcomb pointed out, the alumni delegation to their annual meeting at the university sent a telegram to Corbitt expressing appreciation for his long service and wishing him a speedy recovery. Dr. Newcomb said Corbitt has "been a valued member of our governing board for more than 10 years, and throughout his long and active career has always been solicitous of the interests of the University in all matters affecting its welfare." ****************************************************************************** RITES HELD FOR JAMES CORBITT Services Held In Richmond SUFFOLK, June 26. - Funeral services for James Howard Corbitt, of Suffolk who died Thursday night at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Richmond, were conducted at 6 p.m. Saturday at St. James Episcopal Church, Richmond by Rev. Churchill Gibson, rector. Active pallbearers were Dr. F. Whitney Godwin, C.B. Godwin, Marshall Andrews, Thomas Woodward and Willins Cohoon, of Suffolk, and Frank Lawrence, of Portsmouth. Honorary pallbearers were Governor Colgate Darden, Jr., E. Randolph Williams, Murray McGuire, Dr. J. Shephard Horsley, Thomas B. Gay, of Richmond; W.R.C. Cocke, Robert B. Tunstall, and William Plunkett, of Norfolk; Dr. L.W. White, James L. McLemore, Sr., and Harvey Holland, of Suffolk. Also William H. White, Jr., of Charlottesville; Gardner L. Boothe, of Alexandria; Lewis C. Williams, Edward C. Anderson and Dr. Dabney L. Lancaster, of Richmond; Barron F. Black and Mrs. A.D. Calcott, of Norfolk; Edward R. Stettinius, of Washington, D.C.; Mrs. J.M.H. Willis and C. O'Conor, of Fredericksburg. Also Maithland H. Bustard, of Dunville; Christopher B. Garrett, of Arlington; R. Grey Williams, of Winchester; Mrs. Benjamin Wales, of Sweet Brier, and Richard A. Carrington, of Lynchburg. Burial was in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond. Others from Suffolk attending the funeral were Judge John K. Hutton, Mrs. L.W. White, H. Stuart Lewis, M. Erskine Watkins, Miss Lulie Barham and Mrs. Harvey Holland. ****************************************************************************** WIFE GETS BULK CORBITT ESTATE Daughters Also Provided For SUFFOLK, July 10. - The will of James H. Corbitt, deceased, was probated today in City Clerk's office, where bond of $80,000 was posted. His two daughters, Harriet and Mrs. Anne Corbitt Little, qualified as co-executrix after their other sister, Mrs. Roberta C. Horsley, of California, waved her right to qualify. The whole net interest or income of Corbitt’s fund is to be paid to his wife. Upon her death, one-half is to go to Harriet, with one-quarter to Roberta and one-quarter to Anne. To Harriet, Corbitt left most of the home furnishings; Roberta: a set of books entitled "The Book of Knowledge" and to Anne: all his books of Virginia and office file papers pertaining to the family genealogy. All residue and remainder of the estate is to be divided by his three daughters. Corbitt was owner of much property in Norfolk, Southampton and Nansemond Counties, as well as in Suffolk. His will also stated that his daughters shall not become heir until Harriet is married or becomes 35 years of age, or upon the death of their mother.
