CROSS, 74, DIES; RITES ARE SATURDAY Virginia Beach, Feb. 11 - (AP) - Dr. Hardy Cross, 74, world renowned in the field of structural engineering, died here Wednesday. Although in failing health since he established his residence here in 1955, four years after his retirement as head of the department of civil engineering at Yale University, Dr. Cross had managed to serve as a consultant for a top engineering firm, make a trip abroad last fall, and do considerable professional writing. A native of Nansemond County and last surviving member of his family, Dr. Cross won acclaim earlier in his teaching career as the originator of new methods of structural engineering analysis. Notable among his innovations was the moment distribution method of computing stress in rigid frames. His textbooks on the subject have been widely translated abroad. Dr. Cross, recipient of numerous awards, was recently nominated by the Virginia Society of Professional Engineers for the top honorary award of the national society. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Christ Church, Smithfield. Burial will be in the family lot in Smithfield.
