All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ MARION AUSTIN CROSS M.A. CROSS, SUFFOLK CIVIC AND BUSINESS LEADER, DIES Suffolk - Marion Austin Cross, 80, widely-known Suffolk businessman and civic leader, died Monday at 7:40 a.m. at Obici Memorial Hospital after an illness of several months. Mr. Cross a native of Sunbury, N.C. came to Suffolk in 1895 as a youth of 17 as a clerk in a grocery store on North Main Street. After a few months he became a traveling salesman and in 1905 he and the late R.W. Baker established the Nansemond Grocery Co., with which he has been identified ever since. First general manager, he became president in 1928 after the death of Baker. He had been a member of the board of the Farmers Bank of Nansemond since 1919 and was a former director of the Bank of Sunbury. HELD CITY POSTS Mr. Cross also has served in official positions in the city. He was a school board member from 1933 through 1939 and has been a member of the electoral board since 1911, the year Suffolk became a city. He was chairman of the electoral board during his later years. In recent years he was perhaps best known in his capacity as president of Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, having held that post ever since the hospital corporation was formed by Amedeo Obici 1942. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Evelyn Hurff Cross; four sons, M.A. Cross, Jr., Joseph M. Cross III and John Franklin Cross II of Suffolk and Wilbur R. Cross of Richmond; two daughters, Mrs. Emily Cross Jones of Franklin and Mrs. Mary Evelyn Cross Hayes Jr. of Little Rock, Ark.; a sister, Mrs. Dora Cross Jordan of Suffolk, and seven grandchildren, Milton Randolph Jones and Emerson P. Jones JR. of Franklin, Joseph M. Cross IV, Sarah Hewes Cross and John Franklin Cross III of Suffolk, James Albert Hayes of Little Rock and Susan Kittrell Cross of Richmond. RITES WEDNESDAY Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Main Street Methodist Church by the Rev. George S. Lightner.
