By a strange coincidence two half-brothers, prominent citizens of Nansemond county, neither of whom knew the other was ill, died in their respective homes last night within a few hours of each other. Their funerals will be held tomorrow afternoon at the same hour, but will be separate and burial will be in different cemeteries. Andrew Carter, 83, the first to die, passed away at his residence near Whaleyville, last night at 7:45 after a short illness of influenza. He is survived by two sons, J.F. Carter, of Whaleyville, I.L. Carter, of Black Creek, Va., two half-sisters, Mrs. Willie Lee and Miss Ena Carter, of Holland, three grandchildren, Mrs. S.C. Bristow, of Black Creek, Mrs. W.C. Eure, and Mrs. Claude L. Parker, of Whaleyville, also eleven great grandchildren. He has been a deacon in the Great Fork Baptist Church for 40 years. He was also a Confederate veteran and a member of Captain Bond's company of Gates county. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, at the late residence, conducted by the Rev. J.R. Taylor, assisted by the Rev. J.L. Maxey. Interment in family cemetery. Mike L. Carter, aged 54, died at his home near Holland last night at 10:45 after an illness of several hours of paralysis. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Kate L. Carter, nine children, Mrs. Stella L. Carter, of Holland, Mrs. A.F. Smith, of Norfolk; Misses Annie Sue and Helen E. Carter, of Holland; J.H., C.B., H.W., M.L., and A.R. Carter, all of Holland, Va., two grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. P.H. Lee and Miss Elizabeth E. Carter, of Holland. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at Holy Neck Christian Church, conducted by Dr. N.G. Newman, assisted by the Rev. H.C. Hook. Interment in Holland cemetery.
