Carter Funeral services for Thomas Fred Carter Sr., owner of Carter and Sons Furniture Stores of Suffolk and Franklin, will be conducted Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the First Baptist Church by the Rev. J.C. Mitchell, pastor. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, with Masonic rites at the graveside. The body will be taken from the Hill Funeral Home to the church at 2:45 p.m. Mr. Carter, 64, died Sunday at 2:10 a.m. in Obici Memorial hospital after a long illness. He opened his first store in Suffolk in 1948 after working many years as salesman for Kelley Furniture Store in Suffolk. He was a member of First Baptist Church: Barnabas Sunday School class; Suffolk Masonic Lodge 30, Welcome Pythian Lodge 50, Knights of Pythias; and Suffolk Retail Merchants Association. He was a native of Rayburn [sic; Rabun] County, Ga., a son of the late James and Callie Bradley Carter. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Pearl Turner Carter; a daughter, Mrs. Wilber A. Wright of Nansemond County; four sons, Donald E. Carter, Larry S. Carter and Thomas Fred Carter Jr. of Nansemond County, and David B. Carter of Suffolk; five sisters, Mrs. W.E. Ray of Burlington, Washington, Mrs. Mary Fontenot of Hollywood, Ga., Mrs. Minnie Matthews of Dania, Ga. [sic; Fl..], and Mrs. Irene Raney and Mrs. Joe Dutton of Atlanta; three brothers, J. Ralph Carter of Clayton, Ga., J.M. Carter of Nansemond County and Robert Carter of Fort Pierce, Fla., and 10 grandchildren. [photo, captioned:] THOMAS F. CARTER SR. ****************************************************************************** THOMAS FRED CARTER Mr. Thomas Fred Carter, Sr., father of Tom Carter of Carter Furniture in Franklin died at 2:10 a.m. Sunday at Louise Obici Hospital after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Carter, who was 64, lived at 213 Chestnut St., Suffolk. He was the son of the late James and Mrs. Callie Bradley Carter of Rabun County, Ga. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Pearl Turner Carter, one daughter, Mrs. Wilbur A. Wright of Nansemond County and four sons, Thomas F. Carter, Donald E. Carter and Larry F. Carter, all of Nansemond, and David B. Carter, who lived at home; five sisters, Mrs. W.E. Ray of Burlington, Wash., Mrs. Mary Fontenot of Hollywood, Georgia, Mrs. Minnie Matthews of Dana, Georgia [sic; Dania, Florida], and Mrs. Irene Raney and Mrs. Dutton of Atlanta, Georgia; three brothers, J. Ralph Carter of Clayburn, Georgia, J.M. Carter of Nansemond County, and Robert Carter of Fort Pierce, Florida and ten grandchildren. Mr. Carter was a native of Rabun County, Georgia. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Suffolk, the Barnabus Sunday School Class, Suffolk Masonic Lodge No. 30 AF and AM, a member of Welcome Lodge No. 50, Knights of Phythians [sic; Pythias] and also the Suffolk Retail Merchants Association. He has owned three furniture stores, two in Suffolk and one in Franklin since 1948. Before going into business for himself, he was with Southern Furniture Company. Funeral services were Tuesday in the First Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. J.C. Mitchell, pastor. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery with Masonic rites at the graveside. Pallbearers were: Maurice J. Luke, Walter H. Simpson, Graham B. Harrell, Pretlow Brinkley, Jack Joyner, Howard Mizelle, Phillip Wright, Jr. and W.H.
