All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ WILLIAM MAHONE CRUMPLER CRUMPLER RITES TO BE TODAY AT SUFFOLK Suffolk, May 12 - (AP) - William Mahone Crumpler, 69, president of the Suffolk-Nansemond County Bar Association and eminent in law practice in Suffolk for the past 50 years, died Thursday night in a Suffolk hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Crumpler, in 1900, had the distinction of being the youngest man ever admitted to the Virginia bar. Because he was under age at the time, it took a special act of the State Assembly to pass the bar. He was graduated from the Richmond College law school. Active also in banking circles, he was one of the founders of the American Bank and Trust Company and served on the board of directors since the institution’s inception. He was a member of the Suffolk Knights of Pythias. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Viola S. Crumpler; one son, William M. Crumpler, Jr.; one granddaughter, Miss Viola Janice (Billie) Crumpler; one sister, Mrs. Fannie Crumpler Parrish, all of Suffolk; and one nephew, James Shepherd Parrish, of Hulbert, Mich. Funeral rites will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home.
