ELBERT JOHNSON DAVENPORT 

Davenport Rites To Be Held Sunday 

  Funeral services for Elbert J. Davenport, aged 42, who was killed instantly 
late yesterday afternoon in the logwoods near Holy Neck in Nansemond County, 
will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock by the Rev. R.E. Brittle at 
the I.O. Hill Funeral home in Suffolk. 

  Davenport, who was employed by A.C. Moore, logging contractor, was snaking 
logs when a table slipped, hitting him on the tide of the head and fracturing 
his skull.  He was taken to the Lakeview hospital immediately by Moore, but 
was pronounced dead upon arrival. 

  He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Sarah Wright Davenport, and three sons, 
Richard, Elbert and James Lewis Davenport.  Also a father and a stepmother, 
Mr. and Mrs. James Davenport. 

  Davenport was a resident of Nansemond county and had been employed by Moore 
for the past eight months. 

  Burial will be in the Holy Neck Christian church cemetery.

  Suffolk, Sept. 26. - Funeral services for Elbert J. Davenport were conducted 
at 3 p.m. today at the I.O. Hill & Co. Funeral Home by the Rev. R.E. Brittle. 
Burial was in Holy Neck Christian Church Cemetery.  Vocal music was rendered 
by Mrs. A.E. Byrum and Mrs. Emmet Stancill [sic; Emmett Stancell], accompanied 
by Mrs. Julian Goodwin; and pallbearers were A.C. Moore, Ray Roberts, Charles 
Holland, Raleigh Roberts, Otha Vann and Clyde Baker.

Davenport Rites Held Yesterday 

  Funeral services for Elbert J. Davenport were conducted at 3 o'clock Sunday 
afternoon at the I.O. Hill and Co., Funeral home by the Rev. R.E. Brittle. 

  Mrs. A.E. Byrum and Mrs. Emmett Stancell sang, "Old Rugged Cross" and "God 
will take Care of You," accompanied by Mrs. Julian Goodwin. 

  The casket was covered with a spray of pink gladiolas and white mums. 

  Active pallbearers were A.C. Moore, Ray Roberts, Charlie Holland, Raleigh 
Roberts, Otha Vann and Clyde Baker.

   Albert Johnson DAVENPORT. 

D.Cert. 20282 (Holy Neck #268) gives son of Jim & Martha DAVENPORT. 

Rather, he was the son of "Jim" James Johnson DAVENPORT & first wife Maggie 
   (AINSLEY) DAVENPORT.  His father (1875 - 1944) & step-mother are buried 
   in Azalea Memorial Gardens, Columbia, Tyrrell Co., NC. 

His first wife Georgie Louise (WILLIAMS) DAVENPORT (1909 - 1940) is buried 
   in Bethlehem Christian Church Cemetery.

   Camden Co., NC.  She was the daughter of Edgar & Leora (ROBERTS) WRIGHT, 
   also buried at Holy Neck.  Sarah 2m. Navy veteran Wallace Lee TRAVIS in 
   Nov 1958 in Duval Co., FL.  They are buried in Chapel Hill Memorial 
   Gardens, Watertown Twp., Clinton Co., MI.  A clipping of her obit, 
   including a small photo, is posted with Find a Grave Memorial #291924647 
   by Countrygirl.
