Davenport, aged 42, who was killed instantly late yesterday afternoon in the logwoods near Holy Neck in Nansemond County, will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock by the Rev. R.E. Brittle at the I.O. Hill Funeral home in Suffolk. Davenport, who was employed by A.C. Moore, logging contractor, was snaking logs when a table slipped, hitting him on the tide of the head and fracturing his skull. He was taken to the Lakeview hospital immediately by Moore, but was pronounced dead upon arrival. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Sarah Wright Davenport, and three sons, Richard, Elbert and James Lewis Davenport. Also a father and a stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. James Davenport. Davenport was a resident of Nansemond county and had been employed by Moore for the past eight months. Burial will be in the Holy Neck Christian church cemetery. ****************************************************************************** Elbert J. Byrum and Mrs. Emmet Stancill [sic; Emmett Stancell], accompanied by Mrs. Julian Goodwin; and pallbearers were A.C. Byrum and Mrs. Emmett Stancell sang, "Old Rugged Cross" and "God will take Care of You," accompanied by Mrs. Julian Goodwin. The casket was covered with a spray of pink gladiolas and white mums. Active pallbearers were A.C. Moore, Ray Roberts, Charlie Holland, Raleigh Roberts, Otha Vann and Clyde Baker. Rather, he was the son of "Jim" James Johnson DAVENPORT & first wife Maggie (AINSLEY) DAVENPORT. His father (1875 - 1944) & step-mother are buried in Azalea Memorial Gardens, Columbia, Tyrrell Co., NC. His first wife Georgie Louise (WILLIAMS) DAVENPORT (1909 - 1940) is buried in Bethlehem Christian Church Cemetery. Navy veteran Wallace Lee TRAVIS in Nov 1958 in Duval Co., FL. They are buried in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Watertown Twp., Clinton Co., MI.
