All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ CHARLES BONAPARTE DUKE Suffolk, March 2 - Funeral services for Charles Bonaparte Duke, prominent Suffolk citizen and former merchant, who died last night at his home on Chestnut Street, will be held Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the residence, conducted by the Rev. John G. Truitt, pastor of the Suffolk Christian Church, in which Mr. Duke had long held membership. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Besides his wife, Mrs. Grace Carr Duke, Mrs. Duke is survived by one brother, C.J. Duke, of Suffolk; two sisters, Mrs. Mamie Rawles of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Worthy Harrell of Portsmouth; the following nieces and nephews; Charles C. Duke, Miss Rachel Duke and Sidney Brinkley, of Suffolk; Mrs. Sidney Stallings and Charlie Harrell, of Port Norfolk, and Mrs. Earle McGary, of Los Angeles. For a long number of years Mr. Duke was engaged in the mercantile business in Suffolk, and later he was a salesman, having a wide circle of friends not only in this city but in the territory through which he travelled. ****************************************************************************** CHARLES B. DUKE Suffolk, March 3 - Funeral services for Charles Bonaparte Duke, prominent citizen of this city and former merchant, who died at his home on Chestnut Street Thursday night, will be held this afternoon at the home on Chestnut Street, conducted by the Rev. John G. Truitt, pastor of the Suffolk Christian Church, of which Mr. Duke was a member. A quartet choir, composed of Mrs. A.D. Brinkley, Mrs. Gladys Dole Morgan, W.W. Ballard and James Harrell, sang "In the Hour of Trial" and "Abide with Me." Mrs. C.R. Wallace was accompanist. The casket was covered with a pall of lilies and white roses. Active pallbearers were Charles Williams, Dr. G. Richardson Joyner, Robert Tynes, I.P. Brinkley, Dr. J.E. Rawls, Dr. C.F. Griffin, Charles D. Andrews and M.C. Flanders. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
