All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ SARAH REBECCA DUKE Miss Sara [sic; Sarah] Duke Dies At Home in the County Miss Sara Rebecca Duke, a very widely known and prominent resident of Nansemond county, died Saturday afternoon at her home "Clearview Estate," after a short illness of bronchial pneumonia. She was the daughter of the late Frances [sic; Francis] Duke, and the last of her family. She is 76 years of age. Miss Duke is survived by three vsisters, Misses Lura and Annie Rabey, who are residents of the county, and Mrs. George Doughtry [sic; Daughtrey], of Suffolk; two half-brothers, E.K. Rabey, of Deans, and J.S. Rabey, of Suffolk; a niece, Miss Susie Lynton Rabey. who has made her home with Miss Duke from childhood, and a number of other nieces and nephews, and also a host of friends. Funeral services will be held at the residence Monday afternoon at 2:30, with Dr. W.W. Staley, the Rev. I.W. Johnson, the Rev. H.S. Hardcastle and the Rev. S.K. Emurian, officiating. ****************************************************************************** May [sic; Many] Attend Last Rites for Miss Duke The funeral services of Miss Rebecca Duke were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the residence, the Clear View estate, near Nurneys, Va., conducted by Dr. W.W. Staley, assisted by Rev. H.S. Hardcastle, Dr. I.W. Johnson, the Rev. S.K. Emurian and the Rev. Mr. Brittle. There were many handsome floral designs, and a very large crowd of friends present showing the high esteem in which she was held in her community. Active pallbearers were W.A. Ellis, J.L. Hare, E.A. Brothers, J.T. Shepherd, L.F. Bradshaw, A.J. Johnson, F.F. Brinkley, Fronia Spencer; honorary, Col. E.E. Holland, A.H. Hargrave, Dr. A.S. Mitchell, Dr. D.L. Harrell, W.W. Ballard, Roger Harrell, Leo Rawles, Charlie Rawles, John Bradshaw, Hersey Knight, George Smith, Jet Powell, J.H. Eason, M.E. Cruiser, James Tidwell, Charlie Badger, M.A. Elliott, John Nelms, Emmett Rodgers, R.C. Norfleet, J.T. Turner, J.V. Hare, Mr. Harcum. Interment was in the family cemetery near Nurneyville. Her mother (1834 - 1892) 2m. Andrew Jackson RABEY in 1859; they are also buried there. Her step-father (1837 - 1892) was a Confederate veteran, having served as a private in Co. I, 41st VA Infantry.
