The funeral of Mr. John DeGaribody was held at 3:30 o'clock yesterday morning at his late residence, 1101 South street, the Rev. A.C. Bledsoe, pastor of Owens Memorial Methodist Church, officiating. The services were attended by a delegation of the members of Stonewall Camp, Confederate Veterans, of which Mr. DeGaribody was a member, and in addition, there was a large concourse of friends and relatives. The pall bearers were: Messrs. Jock Shackleford, Henry Privett, J.T. Stafford, C.C. Peed, John A. Codd and Colonel E.W. Owens. The 1860 Census - Lower Parish, Nansemond Co. - gives age 34 (b. circa 1826). The 1870 Census - Sleepy Hole Dist., Nansemond Co. - gives age 44 (b. circa 1826). The 1880 Census - Western Branch Dist., Norfolk Co. - gives age 62 (b. circa 1818). John, age 37 (b. circa 1828), son of John & Mary, and Margaret Susan (JUSSELY; widow of William) REDD (1827 - 1905), daughter of Jonathan & Emily JUSSELY, May 4, 1865 in Nansemond Co. John served as a fourth sergeant in Co. F, 3rd VA Infantry. Captured 3 Jul 1863 at Gettysburg, he was held as a POW at Point Lookout, MD, until paroled for exchange 18 Feb 1865. He was on medical furlough in Suffolk when he presented himself to the Federal Provost Marshall April 4, 1865 and took the Oath of Allegiance.
