DARDEN FUNERAL SERVICES FOR SUFFOLK BANKER AND BUSINESS MAN TOMORROW Suffolk, May 30 - J.M. Darden, 71, vice president of the National Bank of Suffolk and one of Suffolk’s leading citizens and business men, died this morning at 2 o’clock at Bleakhorn Camp, his summer camp on the Nansemond River, after an illness of several months. Mr. Darden had spent the winter in Miami, returning home several weeks ago only slightly benefited by his trip, and since that time had been under constant care of doctors and nurses. Wednesday, he appeared better, and left his home on Broad Street for his camp on the river, thinking the change might prove beneficial. Yesterday and last night, he entertained a number of friends from Suffolk, among them his physician, Dr. J.E. Rawls. He appeared in good spirits, and told them he was feeling better. He retired at 10:30 o’clock, and was taken sick about 1:30 a.m. He died a half hour later, on his birthday anniversary. Mr. Darden was a native of Isle of Wight County, and was a son of the late Henry and Mrs. Martha Ann Darden, of that county. He lived in Isle of Wight county until 30 years ago, when he came to Suffolk to make his home. He was educated at the private school of Col. William H. Darden, a cousin, one of the best schools in this section in its day. Mr. Darden was a member of the board of directors of the National Bank of Suffolk and vice president of the bank; was a former member of the board of directors of the Farmer’s Bank of Nansemond; was president of Sands & Co., with offices in Suffolk, Atlanta, Greensboro and other points in the south; a member of the Suffolk Christian Church, president of the Christian Church Orphanage, at Elon College; member of the board of missions of the church and assistant secretary; member of the board of finance of the Suffolk Christian Church, and a member of the board of deacons. He took an active interest in all church organizations and gave freely of his time and money for their activities. He was also a member of Suffolk Lodge 30, A.F. & A.M. His charities were widespread. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Viola Whitley Darden; five daughters, Mrs. C. Lynch Christian, of Lynchburg; Mrs. Richard Ziesing, of Bryn Mawr, Pa.; Mrs. H. Ford Whelden, of Detroit; Miss Antoinette Darden, of Suffolk and Mrs. Jack Musick, of Evanston, Ill.; two sons, Jack M. Darden, Jr., of Roanoke, and Henry Claiborne Darden, of Charleston, S.C.; ten grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. W.A. Lassiter, of Nansemond County, and Mrs. M. E. Vaughan, of Portsmouth, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock at the residence, 104 South Broad Street, by the Rev. John G. Truitt, pastor of the Suffolk Christian Church. Pallbearers will be members of the firm of Sands & Co., with whom Mr. Darden was closely associated in business, H.W. Stephenson, Z.A Snipes and C.E. Sumner, of Atlanta; F.H. Snipes, of Knoxville, Tenn.; P.D. Snipes, of Raleigh, N.C.; E.L. Snipes, of Greenville, N.C., and L.C. Vaughan, of Greensboro, N.C. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
