All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ MEDIANN ELIZABETH SIMONS DARDEN Funeral services for Mrs. Mattie [sic; Mittie] Darden, who died Thursday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mills Godwin, in Chuckatuck, were conducted Saturday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock at Western Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. J. Sidney Cobb, pastor of the church. The choir accompanied by Miss Nellie Mae Nelms sang "Rock of Ages," "Sometime We’ll Understand" and "In the Sweet, Bye and Bye." She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Mills Godwin, a son, Leonard Darden, of Suffolk, two sisters, Mrs. Paul Powell and Mrs. Pattie Ashburn, Myrtle, one brother, Sam Simons, of Holland, four grandchildren, Mary Lee, Mildred and Leah Godwin, Mills Godwin, Jr., and several nieces and nephews. Nephews of the deceased acted as pallbearers, they were; John Henry Powell, Edward and Mills Simons, Stanley Rogers, Archie Nelms and Simon Williams. Honorary pallbearers were J.R. Chapman, C.H. Pill, J.W. Bryant, J.W. Holland, W.N. Rippey, D.C. Cotton, C.T. Whitfield, Dr. L.L. Eley, E.W. Bagnell, A.L. Hazelwood, J.E. Batten, W.W. Godwin, Leroy Pope, E.P. Trotman, Sam Nelms, J.B. Archer, J.B. Matthews, S.L. McClenny, R.A. Daughtrey, J.A. Ashburn, Jack Williams and George E. Rogers. Interment was in church cemetery. "Mittie" Media Anne Elizabeth (SIMONS; Mrs. Richard D.) DARDEN, Nansemond Co. native, d. 29 Mar 1934, at daughter's home, Chuckatuck, age 79, interred in Western Branch Baptist Church Cemetery (Row 4, Plot 1*), 31 Mar 1934, donated obit, newspaper unknown *She shares a gravestone with daughter Annie J. DARDEN (1880-1917).
