DARDEN’S DEATH Colonel William Herbert [sic; Henning*] Darden, one of the best known citizens of Isle of Wight County, died today at his home, near Orbit. Colonel Darden had been in poor health for a year or two, and for the past month his end was looked upon only as a matter of time. The internment will take place in Suffolk at 2:30 o’clock Saturday afternoon. The body will be laid beside the grave of his late wife, who was Miss Nelms [sic; Darden*]. The deceased was nearly 80 years old. Colonel Darden gained his title by being colonel of militia during antebellum days. He resided most of his life on the farm where death came. Colonel Darden was formerly a school teacher, and during the prosecution of that profession be endeared himself to hundreds of young people, by whom his memory will be revered always. Colonel Darden leaves two children - Mrs. J.R. Darden, of Belvidere, N.C. and Mr. L.J. Darden of Isle of Wight County. Both made their father’s last days on earth as comfortable as possible by unremitting attention. Colonel William Henning DARDEN, former teacher, antebellum militia commander, Isle of Wight Co. native, d. 13 Jan 1899, at home, near Orbit, age 79, interred in Cedar Hill Cemetery (Block C, Lot 101*), Suffolk, 14 Jan 1899, "The Virginian-Pilot" (Norfolk, VA), Jan. 14, 1899, p. 7, col. 2 *Additional information: Cedar Hill list, an extension of the Southampton County Historical Society {SCHS} Cemetery Project: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/nansemond/cemeteries/cedar_d.txt His monument shows WM.H. DARDEN, July 26, 1849 - Jan. 12, 1899. (Find a Grave Mem. #91122107) He is also marked ["COLONEL WILLIAM HENNING DARDEN" (no dates)] with his first wife, Mary (WILLIAMSON) DARDEN (d. 20 Jan 1852, age 20 {1850 Census shows age 17}), in a Darden family cemetery, on Orbit Rd. (1 of 2) Central Hill Baptist Church. Isle of Wight County Historical Society {IWCHS} Grave Site Survey Task Force {GSSTF} report #7: http://www.iwchs.com/Cemetery-Reports.html Also marked there are Thomas DARDEN Sr. (d. 10 May 1859, age 79) & Mary DARDEN (d. 8 Mar 1854, age 58), who seem to be William's parents. We show Mary's maiden name as MORRIS. Also buried there is J.S. Lee (1864-1865), son of A.V. & G.T. NELMS. They are George Thos. & Alexine Va. (DARDEN) NELMS, buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Newport News. Alexine (1831-1897) could have been the Colonel's sister of niece, and the source of confusion over his second wife's maiden name. Widowed, William H. DARDEN, "32," sn/o Thomas & Polly, 2m. Margaret E. DARDEN (1836-1889), dt/o John H. & Margaret DARDEN, 7 Dec 1854, in IoW.Co.
