All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JAMES EVANS Major James Evans, who was born and raised in Suffolk, died at his home, in Fort Myers, Florida, on Saturday, January 12, 1901, aged seventy-seven years. Death was caused by heart trouble, and was quite unexpected, he having been out riding with a friend two days previously. The deceased was never married. His next of kin are children of a sister, Mrs. James B. Norfleet. They are Mrs. L.A. Christie, Misses Julia and Lucy D. Norfleet, and Mr. Jesse Norfleet, of Suffolk; Mr. Charles B. Norfleet, of Gatesville, N.C. and Mr. Frank Norfleet, of Arkansas. Major Evans was a gallant Confederate soldier. After the war he went to Florida, where be held official position for many years, and was very successful in business, being the owner of several orange groves. The funeral took place at Fort Myers, Fla., and the remains were brought to Suffolk for burial, being escorted by Mr. J.L. Cutler, a warm friend of the deceased. They arrived here last Wednesday morning and the interment was made in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Rev. R.H. Potts, of the Methodist church, conducting the burial service. The pall-bearers were as follows: Active - G.M. Brittain, Dr. A.W. Eley, Joseph P. Hall, Edward A. Norfleet, Judge R.R. Prentis, A.A. Riddick, John M. Shepherd, Dr. W.D. Wood. Honorary - R.R. Allen, R.L. Brewer, Sr., General L.S. Baker, Dr. H.A. Morgan, Colonel Thos. W. Smith, H. Woodward. Major Evans was well known and very popular in Suffolk, where he frequently visited. He spent several weeks here last summer, and was then apparently in good health.
