Baker has this week been transferring bodies from Willow Hill to Cedar Hill Cemetery. Those whose dear departed ones have lain in Willow Hill preferred to have the remains moved to a burial place which is better cared for. Cedar Hill is one of the most lovely places of the dead in Virginia. The bodies had been in earth a long time, and there wasn’t anything left except bones, and remnants of clothing. There were thirteen bodies removed and there may be others to follow after a while. They were placed in separate graves. The remains disinterred were those of Elisha Everett, Thomas Everett, a child of the first named, a child of E.L. Everett, the first wife of Rev. J. Pressley Barrett and eight children. Elisha EVERETT, Thomas EVERETT, E. Adelaide EVERETT BARRETT, & ten others, moved from Willow Hill Cemetery to Cedar Hill Cemetery, Apr 1900, "The Virginian-Pilot" (Norfolk, VA), Apr. 21, 1900, p. 9 *Cedar Hill lists, extensions of the Southampton County Historical Society {SCHS} Cemetery Project: BARRETT http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/nansemond/cemeteries/cedar_a.txt EVERETT http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/nansemond/cemeteries/cedar_d.txt The 1880 Census gives 2 men named Thomas EVERETT in Nansemond Co.: age 69 Holy Neck Dist., w/ son Isaac W. EVERETT; age 25 Sleepy Dist., w/ housekeeper & farm laborers Isaac's father Thomas seems likely the brother of Elisha EVERETT. Adelaide (1854-1881*) was a daughter of Elisha EVERETT. Her unnamed sibling seems identical with Mary Wise EVERETT (1864-1869). E.L. (Elisha Lee) was a son of Elisha EVERETT. His unnamed child seems identical with Emanuel S. EVERETT (d. 1885). *There is BARRETT family cemetery on Babbtown Rd., near Carolina Rd., surrounded by an iron fence, whose gate reads, "REV. J. PRESSLEY BARRETT 1881." I had assumed Adelaide was buried there. (mh) Nansemond Co.
