MARY [sic; MARGARET*] JANE EDWARDS Mrs. Mary Jane Edwards, 84, widow of George Edwards died Tuesday morning at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. W.R. Turner, of Carrollton. Funeral services will be conducted at Oakland Christian Church Chuckatuck, Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock, by Dr. I.W. Johnson. Burial will be in Oakland Church Cemetery. Mrs. Edwards is survived by a daughter, Mrs. James Chapman of Benn’s Church; a son, John W. Bryant [sic*], of Chuckatuck nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. John Harrell, of Suffolk; a brother, William Gay [sic; Gayle*] of Suffolk. EDWARDS, b. 26 Feb 1852, Nansemond Co., d. 29 Dec 1936, at granddaughter's home, Carrollton, interred in Newman Memorial Cemetery, Oakland Christian Church, Chuckatuck, 31 Dec 1936, "The Smithfield (VA) Times," Thurs., Dec. 31, 1936, p. 1, col. 3 *Additional information: Correct data from D.Cert. 30868 (Newport #23), which gives dt/o Jno.Thos. and Margaret Anne (PITT) GAYLE - all b. Nansemond Co. She applied for a Confederate widow's pension for her first husband, Junius Franklin BATTEN, who drowned in 1877, though her second husband also served in the 3rd Va. Infantry. The State Library reported there was a Junius Batten in Co. F, 3rd Va. Infantry - the Nansemond Rangers. The War Dept. reported there was a Junius Batten in Co. F, 3rd Va. Infantry, and a James Batten from that unit was captured at Five Forks. "Historical Notes on Isle of Wight County, Virginia" gives a Frank Batten & George Edwards as members of Co. I, 3rd Va. Infantry - originally the James River Heavy Artillery. Her application states she & Junius were m. 25 Feb 1870, by Rev. Isaac Luke. Ancestry.com "Virginia Marriages" gives James Batten, m. 24 Feb 1869, in Nansemond Co. Her son John Wm. was adopted by Simeon & Sarah Frances (BROWN) BRYANT. They are all buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk - Block F, Lot 86.
