[...] Suffolk, Va., September 8 - [...] FORMER MAYOR A. S. ELEY DEAD The people of Suffolk were shocked this morning to learn that former Mayor Adolphus S. Eley had died at St. Christopher's Hospital in Norfolk, this morning at 2:30 o'clock. [...] ****************************************************************************** SUFFOLK Special to The Landmark. Suffolk, Va., September 10. - [...] FUNERAL SERVICES. The funeral services over the late Adolphus Samuel Eley, who died in St. Christopher's Hospital Friday night, were conducted from St. Paul's Episcopal Church Sunday afternoon, September 9th, at 5:30 o'clock, by Rev. Joseph B. Dunn. The pall-bearers were Messrs. James L. McLemore, Judge R.H. Rawles, William and Walter Eley, T.W. Artman, Willard Pinner, A.A. Riddick and W.C. Wyatt. The vestrymen of the church acted as honorary pall-bearers. They were: Messrs. W.E. Hines, Joseph P. Hall, Simon Lawrence, John Norfleet, John Holladay, Will Pettit, Arthur Woolford, Charles Hutchins, Judge R.R. Prentis, Dr. C.J. Riddick and Dr. J.P. Whedbee. ****************************************************************************** YESTERDAY IN SUFFOLK [...] FORMER MAYOR'S FUNERAL LARGELY ATTENDED. Suffolk Bureau. Suffolk, Va., Sept. 10. - The obsequies of the late Adolphus Samuel Eley, a one-time mayor of this town, took place from here Sunday afternoon. Though ill for only a short time, the body came as announced on the afternoon of Sunday. The Rev Joseph T Dunn had charge of the funeral arrangements and the following were pall-bearers: Active - Judge R.H. Rawles, Walter W. Eley, William Eley, Millard T. Pinner, A.A. Riddick, W.C. Wyatt, James L. McLemore and T.W. Artman. The honorary pall-bearers were: Judge R.R. Prentis, Dr. James P. Whedbee, William E. Hines, John B. Norfleet, Charles L. Hutchins, Arthur Woolford, William J. Pettit, Joseph P. Hall, Simon M. Lawrence, Dr. J.C. Riddick and Justice John Holladay. The funeral and additional expenses were in charge of local officers, who had all arrangements in readiness.
