ELEY Suffolk, Nov. 1 - Burial services for Harvey Christie Eley, 64, who died in Long Island College Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y., on Thursday night, were conducted at the grave in Cedar Hill Cemetery today at 11 o’clock with the Rev. George S. Lightner, pastor of Main Street Methodist Church, officiating. Mr. Eley was born and reared in Suffolk and was a son of the late William Eley and Lucy Christie Eley, of Suffolk. He was a graduate of Suffolk High School and received his B.A. degree from Washington and Lee University and his M.A. degree from Columbia University. After several years of teaching in Virginia he entered the Second Officers’ Training Camp of World War I and was assigned to the 60th Artillery, accompanying that organization to Europe and serving with the First Army on the front until the armistice. He was discharged as a captain and returned to teaching as headmaster of the MacKenzie School at Monroe, N.Y. Later he joined the Vacuum Oil Company, originating its school for salesmen. He served with the Vacuum and Socony Vacuum Oil Company for more than 23 years and was assistant to the vice president in charge of Western sales until his retirement in 1948. He was a talented musician, playing the piano and organ. He served as organist at the Main Street Methodist Church here while attending high school and later was organist and choir master at Lexington while attending Washington and Lee University. He was a member of the University Club and the Bohemians and had maintained his interest in fine music as well as musical production. Surviving are a brother, Col. William S. Eley, USA (Ret.), of Alexandria, and four nieces, Mrs. Edward Blanchard, of Aulander, N.C.; Mrs. Irving J. Harrell, Jr., of Wright Paterson Airfield, Dayton, Ohio; Mrs. Carrington Watkins, of Omaha, Neb.; and Mrs. David Kovarik, of Arlington. The casket was covered by an American flag.
