ELEY, 83 OF CHUCKATUCK, DIED AUGUST 20 Dr. Lemuel Leslie Eley, 83, lifelong resident of Chuckatuck, died August 20, 1954, at 12:30 p.m. at Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk. Dr. Eley had been in failing health for the last year but had continued active until a few days before his death. He had practiced medicine in Nansemond County for 63 years, initially at Crittenden, and later in Chuckatuck. He was graduated from the old Suffolk Military School and from the Medical School of the University of Maryland. He was a member of the Benns Methodist Church, the American Medical Association, the Chuckatuck Ruritan Club, Crittenden Red Med's Lodge, and for a number of years was a member of the Nansemond County School Board. He was a son of Benjamin Claudius and Mrs. Eugenia Cowling Eley. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Laura Cunningham Eley; two daughters, Mrs. Edith Thacker, of Norfolk and Mrs. Eugenia Stroupe of Eogalusa, La.; one son, L.L. Eley Jr. of Buena Vista and one brother, Thomas Eley, of Baltimore, Md., and two grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, August 22, 1954, at 4 p.m. at Benns Methodist Church by the Rev. I.W. Johnson and the Rev. Ray Carson. Burial was in Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers were W.G. Saunders, Mills E. Godwin, Jr., G.L. Gwaltney, Carter Harrison, Frank Spady, Hardee Gilliam, C.C. Johnson, and H.W. White. Friends of the family served as honorary pallbearers.
