Many Matters of Interest Picked Up in and Around Town. Special to The Landmark. Suffolk, Va., April 18. - Mrs. Lucie Carver Eley, wife of Mr. William Eley, Jr., drowned herself this morning at an early hour by jumping into the cistern at her residence. There was, perhaps, no better lady in our town than Mrs. Eley, who had led a life of exceptional goodness through all her days, and it is doubtless heartrending to her aged mother, her husband and other relatives to know that her life departed from its tenement of clay as a result of her own act. This, however, was not the act of one responsible for her actions, as Mrs. Eley had been suffering from a complication of physical ailments, together with nervous prostration, for more than a year and from paralysis for many months. In addition to these troubles one of her sons was confined to his room with a broken leg, and all together had caused unbalancing of her mind. She had been watched for some time to prevent a possible act of this kind, and success had crowned the efforts of her loved until to-day. Mr. Eley awoke this morning to find his wife gone, and searching the house failed to find her. He notified the police and that she was gone, and search was made, when the open cistern caused examination of that place with the result above stated. We had known Mrs. Eley from her girlhood, having been to school with her, and no purer, nobler, nor more Christ-like character could be found among the many girls of her childhood. She continued the life of goodness so early begun under the care of her Christian mother, Mrs. Lizzie Christie, and her host of friends loved her dearly. She leaves to mourn their loss a husband, four children, mother and one brother, besides many other relatives, and to them we extend our heartfelt sympathies in this, their time of trial, and commend them to the care of Him who doeth all things well, realizing that God knoweth the course and showeth great mercy, and will remember the good things she had done in her lifetime. The funeral services will take place from the Main Street Methodist Church at 3 o'clock to-morrow (Tuesday) afternoon. Her many friends and acquaintances are invited to attend. ****************************************************************************** SUFFOLK.
