He was a native of Nansemond County, son of Richard F. Eley and Mrs. Algenettie Oliver Eley, member of the First Baptist Church and a charter and honorary member of the King’s Fork Ruritan Club. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruth Turner Eley of Suffolk; a son, Clinton Turner Eley of Hertford, N.C.; two grandsons, Charles Eley and Sidney Eley of Hertford; four sisters, Miss Jennie Eley and Mrs. Ethel Eley Boothe of Norfolk, Mrs. J.B. Archer and Miss Ophelia Eley of Nansemond County, and a brother, Thomas C. Eley of Arlington. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Baker Funeral Home here by the Rev. J.C. Mitchell, pastor of First Baptist Church, and the Rev. James O. Mattox of Hertford, N.C. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. ****************************************************************************** Walter Clinton Eley, 69, Dies Here Today Walter Clinton Eley, 69, died today at 10:30 a.m. at the Lane Nursing Home after a long illness. He was a son of the late Richard F. Eley and Algenettie Oliver Eley of Nansemond County. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Suffolk and a charter member and honorary member of the King’s Fork Ruritan Club. He is survived by his wife. J.C. Mitchell, pastor of the First Baptist Church and the Rev. James O. Matton, of Hertford, N.C. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The casket was covered with a pall of white asters and red roses. A quartet composed of Bill Hall, E.H. Rountree, Garland Griffin and the Rev. Ward Donat sang "Let The Lower Lights Be Burning," accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Helen Whitley. Pallbearers were Jim Bass, Harry Winslow, Willie Ainsley, James E. Gardner, Ollie B. Davis, John Atkinson, Eugene Wagner and John A. Daughtrey.
