Suffolk Mourns Loss Of William S. Eley In N. C. News of Death of Former Suffolk Merchant in North Carolina Received With Extreme Sorrow By His Many Friends in This City. BRINGS BODY BACK HERE FOR SERVICE Paralysis Was Fatal to Highly Esteemed Citizen of Suffolk Who Was Visiting in N. C. When Stricken; Was 73 Years Old at Death. William S. Eley, once one of Suffolk's most prominent merchants and a member of one of its oldest families, died yesterday morning after a brief illness in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lyman Jones, who he was visiting, at her home in Early, N.C. Mr. Eley left Suffolk last Thursday expecting to spend a few days with Mrs. Jones, but was stricken with paralysis Saturday morning and never rallied from the first attack. The news of his illness came as a shock to his many acquaintances here, as he had been in his usual health apparently during the summer. His death has caused profound sorrow among a wide circle of relatives and friends here and elsewhere, he being very well known in the eastern sections of both Virginia and North Carolina, which he had traveled extensively in the interest of an invention he put on the market several years ago. For years Mr. Eley conducted one of the largest mercantile establishments on "Washington Square," his store being located on the south side of the street about where the E.L. Folk & Company hardware store is now located. His many years in the dry goods business brought him into contact with hundreds of people in this section. Son of Colonel Eley He was the son of the late Colonel William Eley and was in his 74th year. His wife preceded him to the grave many years ago, but besides his daughter in whose home he died, he is survived by three sons, J.C. Eley, of St. Louis; Captain William C. Eley, U.S.A., now assigned to the military academy at West Point, N.Y., and Harvey S. Eley, of New York City. Other near relatives are a sister, Mrs. Eudora Kilby, of Suffolk, and a number of grandchildren who reside in other places. The body was brought direct from Early by motor last night and was accompanied by his children and grandchildren, all of whom are at the family residence on North Main street, where it will remain until this afternoon at 4 o'clock, when the funeral will take place from the Main Street Methodist Church, of which he had long been a member. Burial will be in Cedar Grove [sic; Hill] cemetery and the service will be conducted by his pastor, the Rev. J.K. Joliff. The pallbearers will be J. Chambliss Eley, Harvey Eley and Captain Eley, his sons; Douglas Eley, C. Lyman Jones, Claude Dennis, Jr., and Hill Kilby, all being near relatives. Mr. Eley has lost two brothers by death during the past year, and of a family of 13 children, only one remains, Mrs. Kilby. During the past summer all of his children had visited him, as had long been their custom, in the family home.
