Cohen Ellis Dies In Alabama SUFFOLK, April 11. - News has been received of the death of W. Cohen Ellis, 62, Monday afternoon at his home in Gadsden, Alabama. He was a native of Nansemond County and son of the late Benjamin C. and Maude Parker Ellis. He is survived by his wife, Mary Grant Ellis; two sons and two daughters; one brother, George T. Ellis of Somerton, Va.; three sisters, Mrs. W.H. Mathews, of Winton, N.C.; Mrs. Charles Akers, of Hopewell, Virginia; Mrs. Maude Early, of Richmond, Virginia; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held in Gadsden Wednesday morning, after which the body was shipped to Suffolk. The body will lie in state in the Somerton Methodist Church on Thursday from 2 o'clock until 4:30, at which time burial services will be conducted by Rev. S.B. [sic; J.S.] Cobb and Rev. Ratchford. Interment will be in the church cemetery. ****************************************************************************** WILLIAM COHEN ELLIS SUFFOLK, April 13. - Funeral services for William Cohen Ellis, who died Monday in Gadsden, Alabama, were conducted at 4:30 yesterday afternoon at the grave in Somerton Church cemetery by Rev. W.T. Ratchford and Rev. J.S. Cobb. Mrs. W.C. Eason and Mrs. C.V. Cross sang, "In the Sweet Bye and Bye." The casket was covered with a pall of white gladioli, easter lilies and red roses. Active pallbearers were E.J. Langston, J.H. Langston, Hewitt Freeman, Lloyd Freeman, B.T. Parker, J.E. Carroll, W.T. Howell and Stafford Moore. Nellie appears in the 1930 Census - 237 High St., Petersburg - divorced, with their four children & her parents, Ernest Lee & Ida Lee (SHEFFIELD) DAVIS. Nellie (1888 - 1979) 2m. in 1938 widower Theophilus Mack BLACKWELL; they & her parents are buried in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg. Cohen was the son of Benjamin Crowder & Maude Lavinia (PARKER) ELLIS. Find a Grave Memorial #224126717 gives Benjamin (1847 - 1918) as buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk. However, his NC D.Cert. gives buried near Somerton, VA.
