ELAM IS VICTIM OF HEART TROUBLE PROMINENT SUFFOLK CITIZEN SUCCUMBS IN HOSPITAL AFTER WEEK’S ILLNESS. Suffolk, Nov. 12 - William Gordon Elam, 70, prominent and widely known resident of this city, and senior member of the old and well know firm of Woodward and Elam, died today at 12:30 o’clock in a local hospital, following several week’s illness of heart trouble. Mr. Elam was the son of the late Robert Samuel and Martha Ann Robertson Elam and was born in Charlotte County, but came to Suffolk as a small boy, and during his life has been associated with the business, social and civic life of the community. The firm of Woodward and Elam was organized in July 1897, with Richard L. Woodward and Mr. Elam as members, and on the death of Mr. Woodward some years ago, the firm continued with Mr. Elam as senior member and Rawles Woodward, son of R.L. Woodward as junior member. In his younger days, Mr. Elam represented the Atlantic and Danville Railway, now the Southern, and was also an operator for the Postal Telegraph Company. He was a member of St. Paul’s No. 685, B.P.O. Elks, Suffolk Lodge No. 30 A.M. and A.M. Mount Nebo Royal Arch Chapter No. 20, the Khedive Temple, Knights of the Mystic Shrine, and the Commander. He was a member of the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Woodward Elam; a daughter, Miss Martha Virginia Elam, who was away at college at the time of his death; two sisters, Mrs. Charles M. Boswell and Miss Alma Elam of Chase City; three own nephews, Robert Boswell and Kilby Elam of Richmond and Charles Boswell of New York City; the following half-nieces and nephews: Miss Lena Parker and Clarence E. Booker of Suffolk, Mrs. Griff Edwards, Miss Grace Boswell, Mrs. Sidney Harris, Mrs. Robey Walker, Mrs. Thomas Cothan, Mrs. Marie Carl of Portsmouth, Mrs. J. Spooner Eppes of Petersburg, and Mrs. E. Lyell Gunts of Baltimore. The body was taken to the residence on Pinner Street, where on Monday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock, funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Herbert N. Tucker, rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Cedar Hill cemetery. William Gordon ELAM, Suffolk businessman, b.
