Who has not lost a friend." These lines seem to be applicable to Suffolk and vicinity in an unusual degree, for since the new year came in the angel of death has been among us gathering many sheaves for his garner. On Friday, March 9, 1900, at about 6:30 p.m., after having been sick for a week with pneumonia, Miss Evalina Maria Finney entered into that rest that remains for the people of God. The deceased was the oldest daughter of Crawley and Susan Jordan Finney, her father being both a physician and a minister. She was born in Suffolk, November 18, 1827, and was, therefore, in the seventy-third year of her age. Over fifty years ago she began teaching, and more than thirty years ago she and her sisters established the Suffolk Female Institute, now Suffolk College, an institution which has prepared hundreds of young ladies for the active duties of life, and to all of them who hear of this death will come precious memories of "Miss Evie," as she was familiarly known by young and old - of her tender watch-care in health and her gentle ministrations in sickness. With a sympathetic nature, a loving heart, and a bountiful hand, her influence for good was felt in many quarters, and on the great day of final accounts there will be many to rise up and call her blessed. She was a consecrated Christian woman, having for many years been a member of the Methodist church, and by following in the footsteps of her master, she won His commendation of "Inasmuch as ye did it unto one of the least of these, my brethren, ye did in unto Me." Miss Finney was one of the most well known ladies in this section, and her popularity was unbounded. She was extremely sociable and hospitable, and as a housekeeper and caterer she had no equal. Bright, and cheerful and entertaining, she carried sunshine along her pathway, and her cheer voice and smiling face will be sadly missed by those with whom she mingled in the various walks of life. Having lived on earth more than the allotted three-score years and then, and having served well her day and generation, by her godly walk and conversation making an impress of good upon those with whom she came in contact, this good woman has entered into that rich inheritance that awaited her in the better land. She leaves to mourn their loss four sisters - Misses Sally A. and Fannie T. Finney, Mrs. L.F. Crump and Mrs. W.J. Kilby - who have the consolation that it is well with their loved one. Miss Finney’s funeral took place at Suffolk College on Monday last, at 11 o’clock, and a large number of friends were present to pay the last tribute of love and respect to her memory. The services were conducted by Revs. J.H. Kabler and W.T. Green, of the Methodist church; Rev. W.W. Staley, D.D., of the Christian church, and Rev. J.B. Dunn, of the Episcopal church. The singing was rendered by Miss Florence Harvey, vocal teacher at the College, and members of her class. The interment was made in the family lot in Cedar Hill Cemetery, her pallbearers being as follows: Active - S.T. Ellis, W.H. Jones, Jr., R.R. Allen, Dr. W.D. Wood, J.C. Causey, Jr., John C. Holladay, A.S. Eley, Surry Parker. Honorary - Dr. E.D. Phillips, General L.S. Baker, Colonel T.W. Smith, W.J. Cohoon, Dr. H. Wood Campbell, Dr. A.W. Eley, Dr. H.A. Morgan, Lee Britt. A wealth of beautiful floral tributes attested the love and esteem of many friends, and her last resting place was covered with these fitting emblems of her pure and holy life. After the toil and trouble, there cometh a day of rest; After the weary conflict, Peace on the Savior’s breast. After the guiding counsel, Communion full and sweet; After the willing services, All laid at the Savior’s feet.
