FERGUSON, 74, DIES IN SUFFOLK PROMINENT BUSINESS LEADER AND CHURCHMAN HAD BEEN ILL SEVERAL WEEKS. Suffolk, April 11 - Walter B. Ferguson, 74, prominent business, church, civic and social circles of this city founder of the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce and its first president, died this morning at 9 o’clock at a local hospital after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Ferguson, a number of years ago was instrumental in bringing the Bell Telephone Company to Suffolk, and was its local manager until 1922, when it was taken over by the Chesapeake and Potomac Company. He was largely responsible for the organization of the first Chamber of Commerce in Suffolk, and served as its first president. He was also active in the organization of a Young Men’s Christian Association in this city, which has since ceased to function, and was junior warden and former vestryman of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. He also served for a number of years as a member of the Suffolk City Council. In his business life, he was at one time engaged in the wholesale grocery business, and in the bottling business. At the time of his death he was owner of the Southern Fireworks Distributing Company, and was also for years in the commission business. He was twice married, his first wife, who died a number of years ago, having been Mrs. Emma Lou McGuire. His second wife, Mrs. Nora O’Conner Ferguson, survives him. Besides his wife, Mr. Ferguson is survived by a sister, Mrs. Georgie F. Riddick, of Suffolk; a brother, John Ferguson, of Philadelphia; two nephews, Willis Riddick, of Suffolk, and Henry Ferguson of California; a niece, Miss Helen Ferguson, of Philadelphia, and a great-nephew, Willis Riddick, of Suffolk. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11 o’clock at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church conducted by the Rev. Herbert N. Tucker. Members of the vestry will serve as active pallbearers. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
