Freeman, a prom- inent and esteemed citizen of Nansemond coun- ty, charged with killing a negro woman during the war, with whom he had a fight. He al- ways protested that it was done in self defence, and the statement was so generally accepted, that no arrest was made, though the federal soldiers then held possession of this county.- But long after the war was over, about one month since, he was arrested and thrown into prison, where confinement caused his health to rapidly give way. Last Friday, with a premo- nition that he was soon to die, he managed to escape from the jail, and went directly home, about fifteen miles distant, where he was pros- trated and died on Monday last. An interest- ing family and many friends are thrown into deep sorrow. Richard B.
