Godwin, who died of injuries received in an automobile accident on the Suffolk-Edenton highway. The services were conducted at the Godwin home in Chuckatuck by the Rev. John G. Truitt, pastor of Suffolk Christian Church and the Rev. H.S. Hardcastle, of the Norfolk Christian Temple. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk. Dr. Truitt read the Twenty-third Psalm and during the services at the home the hymn, "Lead Kindly Light," was read. The pall was made of Easter lilies and snapdragons, roses and sweet peas in pastel shades. Scores of handsome designs, many from the organizations with which Mr. Godwin was affiliated, were sent with many others from friends. At the grave, the hymn, "Crossing the Bar," was read. Active pallbearers were J.R. Saunders, Jack W. Nurney, H.T. Jackson, E.L. Jones, A.W. Ballard, George Howerton, R.D. Midjette and J.R. Lane. Hundreds of friends from Suffolk, the county, Norfolk and Eastern Carolina served as on honorary escort. His bro Charles d. 28 Sep 1939, age 14, having fallen from a horse at the fair. (D.Cert. #19812) Their parents are buried in Wesley Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery.
