Godwin, one of the oldest citizens of Suffolk, died very suddenly on Friday evening, November 9, aged eighty years and four months. She was very feeble, but was in usual health and sitting up when her head fell forward and she was found to be unconscious. Death followed in a few minutes. Deceased was the widow of David Godwin, formerly of Stockley Farm, Nansemond County, and at one time proprietor of the old Rising Sun Hotel, in the lower part of Suffolk. She leaves three children - Judge David J. Godwin, of Norfolk, Mrs. Georgeanna McGuire and Miss Elmira Godwin, of Suffolk. She was for a long period a member of the Methodist Church, and was doubtless prepared for the sudden summons. She was a woman of gentle disposition and great kindness of heart, and her death is a sad blow to those who knew and loved her. The funeral took place from the Methodist Church on Sunday morning at 11 o’clock, and her remains were buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Peace to her ashes. Charity C. "Cherry" (KELLY; Mrs. David) GODWIN, d. 9 Nov 1883, age 80, interred in Cedar Hill Cemetery (Block D, Lot 46*), Suffolk, 11 Nov 1883, donated obit, publication unknown *Cedar Hill list, an extension of the Southampton County Historical Society {SCHS} Cemetery Project: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/nansemond/cemeteries/cedar_g.txt Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by Mrs. Bruce Saunders (bs4403@verizon.net), and re-formatted by File Manager. file at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/nansemond/obits/g350c1ob.txt
