GODWIN DIES, AGED 83, IN HOSPITAL Suffolk, - (AP) - Captain Charles Bernard Godwin, 83, prominent Nansemond County resident, and owner of several large farms, died in Lakewood Hospital here early Tuesday. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. James Allen Batten, of Richmond; three sons, Dr. F. Whitney Godwin, onetime head of the FIDAC International Association of Soldiers of World War One, and national vice-commander of the American Legion, of Suffolk Commonwealth’s Attorney Charles B. Godwin of Suffolk, and Frank Whitney Godwin, an insurance executive of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a sister, Mrs. Emmett O. Pope, of Chuckatuck. Captain Godwin had built a fortune from the small packet boat which, as a young man, he had operated in Chuckatuck Creek and the Nansemond River. The steamboat grew to a fleet, which he plied along the Atlantic Coast from New York to Charleston. When he finally disposed of his packets, he bought extensive lands, including timberlands scattered through the South. Funeral services will be held in Suffolk at 4 p.m. Wednesday, the Rev. J.W. Newman and the Rev. Luis A. Haskell officiating. Burial rites will be held at Wesley Chapel in the county at 5 p.m. Capt.
